Harambee Stars Held to a barren Draw by Zimbabwe in AFCON Qualifier

Harambee Stars fail to beat Zimbabwe in their AFCON qualifiers.
Next match is against Namibia in Windhoek.

Kenya’s national football team, Harambee Stars, was held to a goalless draw by Zimbabwe in their opening Group J match of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, played Friday evening at Nambole Stadium in Kampala, Uganda.

Despite dominating possession, Harambee Stars struggled to break through Zimbabwe’s defense, with their only clear chance coming in the 82nd minute when Eric Ouma’s low shot was saved by the Zimbabwean goalkeeper.

Zimbabwe, on the other hand, created several opportunities, with Kenyan goalkeeper Bryne Omondi keeping his side in the game. In the first half, Omondi denied Prince Dube in a one-on-one situation after Khama Billiat played him through. Dube came close again in the second half, narrowly missing the target with a curling shot.

Kenya faced an early setback when defender Alphonce Omija was forced off due to injury after a collision with Omondi. The absence of star striker and captain Michael Olunga was evident as the team struggled to create meaningful chances in the final third.

Despite changes by coach Engin Firat, including the introduction of John Avire, Kenya couldn’t find a breakthrough, settling for a hard-fought point against a resilient Zimbabwean side.

What is the next match?

Harambee Stars’ next match in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers will be against Namibia. The game is set to take place on September 10, 2024, in Windhoek. Following their 0-0 draw with Zimbabwe in the opening game, Kenya will be looking for their first win in Group J. Coach Engin Firat hopes for a better attacking display after a lackluster performance in the first match, with questions about whether star striker Michael Olunga will be available
