Kenya Healthcare Affected as USA Pulls Out of WHO

Following his swearing in on Monday, US President Donald Trump, signed several executive orders which include an exit from the global health body, World Health Organisation (WHO). Trump observed that the USA was paying too much money to the organisation compared to other countries.

USA’s withdrawal will have direct repurcussions in the Kenyan health sector, where many programmes are donor-funded. America is the biggest funder of the organisation, pumping in billions of dollars annually.

Kenya should start putting in place strategic responses to cover disruptions in aid and funding. Other proactive approaches include solidifying regional and global ties and focus on boosting domestic health capacity.
