Top 5 Today: Khalif Kairo Arrested Again This Morning and Other Headlines

In a dramatic turn of events, renowned car dealer, Khalif Kairo,  was arrested again yesterday morning as he appeared for a pre-trial conference at the Milimani Law Courts.

Kairo, who was at Milimani Courts for 2 fraud cases, is out on a cumulative cash bail of KSh 2M. In yesterday’s arrest, he is facing other fresh charges of dishonouring a car sale agreement dated October 15, 2024.

The client, Marion, is accusing him of failing to deliver a 2017 BMW X1, after an initial deposit of KSh 2.2M to Kairo’s KCB account. The high end vehicle is withheld at the Port of Mombasa, since December 21, 2024, after Kairo failed to deposit the amount. The supplier wants to auction the car following non-payment and Marion is seeking compensation for the same.

Africa To Face Shortage of ARVs Amid Trump’s Executive Orders on Aid

Former UN-HABITAT Executive Director, Dr Anna Tibaijuka, has issued a stern notice on global health initiatives following USA President’s decision to halt funding.

The former Tanzanian Minister for Land, Housing, and Human Settlement, Dr Tibaijuka commented on X, about how millions of Africans face potential risks Africa, with the defunding of PEPFAR and WHO.

She cautioned on the looming humanitarian crisis if access to antiretrovirals (ARVs) supply is interrupted. Tibaijuka also called for an immediate African Union special sitting to address the crisis and develop a united response.

“I urge the Ministry of Health to inform Tanzanians about the immediate steps being taken to assess this situation and implement appropriate measures,” Dr Tibaijuka said.

“HIV/AIDS disproportionately affects Africans, and the origins of the disease remain unknown. We must act to protect our people,” she said.

The supply of other lifesaving drugs for malaria and TB are affected as well as medical supplies for newborn babies, in countries supported by USAid globally.

NYS Announces National Recruitment of Volunteers Next Month

A national recruitment exercise for National Youth Service (NYS), as published in the MyGov paper today, is set to begin on February.  

The exercise which will be held across the country, will begin on Monday, February 10, to Saturday, February 15. 

The requirements are:

  • Must be a Kenyan citizens
  • Must be residents of their respective sub-counties of recruitment
  • Have a KCSE mean grade of D plain and above. 
  • An original National ID and Certificate of Good Conduct

Candidates should prepare for a medical check-up during and after the exercise and be prepared for a tough training session. Those who are successful will report for the NYS paramilitary course at the Academy in Gilgil and Naivasha as specified in their calling letters. 

Rebels in DRC Storm Goma as Protesters Attack the French Embassy

The Congolese government is battling clashes between Tutsi-led M23 rebels and the army. According to aid agencies, warehouses with food and medical supplies have reportedly been looted.

Hospitals are said to be overwhelmed with casualties and graphic bodies are lying on the streets, according to the UN.

Though the DRC government insists that its still in charge, fighting in parts of Goma city continues as rebels edge closer to taking it. Protesters are targeting foreign embassies, with the French embassy being the first casualty. They stormed the streets, burning tyres and disrupting traffic.

As fighting escalates, calls for peace talks are mounting with AU calling for ceasefire.

Goma, is a lakeside city which borders Rwanda, acting as a crucial transport and trading hub. It is also next to a large sources of minerals essential in the manufacturing of mobile phones among other electronics.

Rwanda has always denied direct support for the M23 rebels but UN peacekeeping chief, Jean-Pierre Lacroix, has said there is no doubt Kagame’s troops were supporting the rebels. DR Congo demanded sanctions, against Rwanda, at the emergency UN security meeting, saying its forces had crossed over amounting to a “declaration of war”.

Kagame, in a post on X, has agreed on the need for a ceasefire and address the “root causes of the conflict”.
