Africa50 To Build Power Grid After The Exit of Adani
Africa50, a pan-African infrastructure investment platform, is collaborating with the Kenya Electricity Transmission Company Limited (KETRACO) to develop new power transmission lines in Kenya. This partnership aims to enhance the country’s electricity infrastructure through a public-private partnership (PPP) model.
In September 2024, Kenya awarded a $1.3 billion PPP concession to Africa50 and India’s Adani Group for the construction of power transmission lines and substations. This initiative is designed to alleviate Kenya’s debt burden by attracting private sector investment into its energy sector.
However, recent developments indicate that KETRACO has decided to finalize a Ksh 45 billion deal exclusively with Africa50 for the construction of two power lines, following the termination of its partnership with Adani Energy.
This project is poised to be Kenya’s first Independent Power Transmission (IPT) initiative, setting a precedent for private sector involvement in Africa’s power transmission infrastructure. The collaboration between Africa50 and KETRACO underscores a strategic shift towards leveraging private capital and expertise to meet the continent’s growing energy demands.
