Coastal elders (Mijikenda kaya) ask Ruto to re-appoint Mvurya and Jumwa
Coastal elders from the nine clans of the Mijikenda have urged President William Ruto to re-appoint Aisha Jumwa and Salim Mvurya as cabinet secretaries. They described the duo as hardworking and deserving, despite their exclusion from the new cabinet. Their reappointment remains uncertain following a cabinet reshuffle amid political unrest.

Coastal elders traditionally known as the Wazee ya Mijikenda Kaya have come out to ask the President William Ruto to re-appoint Aisha Jumwa and Salim Mvurya as cabinet secretaries. The elders of the 9 clans of the Mijikenda people who ail from the coastal strip of Kenya were speaking at a press meeting they had organized. Aisha Jumwa ails from the northern part of the coastal strip while Mvurya ails from the southern. However, they are all members of the Mijikenda nation that is the indigenous tribe of the formally known as Coast province.
The elders said that they were pleased with the initial appointments of their two ‘children’ and defended the duo by dubbing them hardworking and hence deserve another shot at the cabinet. This comes after President Ruto disbanded his cabinet due to intensive demonstrations in Kenya. The Gen Z demonstrators cited corruption, incompetence and lack of good will by the ministers. However, the President recently named 11 members of his new cabinet and the duo’s names were missing from the list. The absence of their names speculated that the two have lost their positions permanently.
The Mijikenda elders pleaded with Ruto’s government through the president to consider the re-appointment of the two individuals as he embarks on repairing his cabinet. The two coastal politicians were quite vocal during the 2022 elections as they campaigned vehemently for the president’s party UDA.
It is yet to be seen if the president will honor the words elders’ pleas.
