Is JKIA being sold? Musalia responds
In the past week there have been a lot of speculations on the status and future of Kenya’s largest and most important asset; the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. There has been information that the JKIA airport which is under the management of the Kenya Airports Authority was being sold to an Indian company called Andani Airports Limited. The Indian company has airport development and management as part of its portifolio. This development came when Kisii Senator Mr. Richard Onyoka petitioned the Ministry of Roads and Transport to provide detaails on the agreement between KAA and the Indian company. In the petition he seeks clearance on how a build, manage, and transfer model was reached with the company.
The news of the sale of the airport led to unrest in the country majorly on social media where many people clearly did not like the idea. It is also deemed to be part of the many reasons why Kenya’s Gen Z chose the JKIA as their site for Tuesday’s demonstrations.
Answering under the capacity of the acting Treasury CS the Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi denied reports that the government through KAA is selling Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA). Mudavadi went on to asserasserted before the National Assembly’s Budget and Appropriations Committee that JKIA can only be sold through a public process involving parliament Mudavadi acknowledged the need to modernise JKIA and build a new terminal, urging the Kenya Airports Authority to ensure transparency in its investment programmes.
