Jamaica Deploys Troops to Join Kenya-Led Haiti Security Mission

Jamaica has deployed 24 security personnel to join Kenya’s mission in Haiti, aimed at restoring order in the gang-controlled capital.

Prime Minister Andrew Holness reaffirmed Jamaica’s support for Haiti.
The joint efforts are expected to strengthen the mission amidst ongoing challenges.

A Critical Step in the Haiti Security Mission

Jamaica has officially begun its long-anticipated deployment to Haiti as part of the U.S.-funded Multinational Security Support Mission, led by Kenya. Prime Minister Andrew Holness announced that 24 Jamaican security personnel, including members of the Jamaica Defense Force and police officers, will provide essential command, planning, and logistics support. As the situation in Haiti worsens, with gangs controlling over 85% of Port-au-Prince, Jamaica’s involvement is seen as a significant boost to the mission’s efforts.

Jamaica’s Role in a Crucial Mission

The deployment of Jamaican security forces marks an important milestone in the international effort to restore order in Haiti. The group, made up of 20 members of the Jamaica Defense Force and four police officers, will join approximately 400 Kenyan police officers who have been stationed in Haiti since June. Although the Kenyans have faced difficulties in curbing gang violence, the addition of Jamaican forces is expected to provide critical support in protecting key government installations, such as the seaport, which are vital for maintaining Haiti’s infrastructure.

Prime Minister Holness Expresses Solidarity with Haiti

Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness emphasized his nation’s strong connection to Haiti, citing “close fraternal ties” and expressing Jamaica’s commitment to supporting its Caribbean neighbor. Holness, who also serves as Jamaica’s Minister of Defense, reaffirmed the readiness of Jamaican security forces for future deployments as the mission expands. This solidarity reflects Jamaica’s ongoing dedication to regional stability and humanitarian aid.

The Kenya-Led Mission: A Struggle for Progress

Kenya’s Commander, Godfrey Otunge, has welcomed Jamaica’s participation, acknowledging the need for additional support as the mission scales up. Since Kenya’s initial deployment in June, efforts to regain control of Haiti’s capital have been slow, with heavily armed gangs exerting control over large parts of the city. The combined forces of Jamaica and Kenya are crucial in turning the tide, with hopes pinned on their ability to stabilize government operations and reclaim vital areas of the capital.

A Hopeful New Chapter for Haiti

As Jamaican forces arrive in Haiti, the international mission to restore peace and stability enters a new phase. While the challenges are significant, the collaboration between Jamaica, Kenya, and other supporting nations brings renewed hope for Haiti’s future. With increased coordination and resources, the mission aims to restore order and support Haiti in its quest for peace.
