Top 5 Today: More Than 28,000 Teachers To Be Promoted and Other Headlines
28,288 teachers across various grades are up for promotion later this year according to the Teachers’ Service Commission (TSC). The teacher’s governing body has announced plans to promote the teachers in a move that brings the total number of teachers promoted 59,792, in the past two years.
This announcement was made during the release of the 2024 KCSE exam results by the TSC Chairperson, Jamleck Muturi. He emphasized the need for promotions as a way to reflect “the commission’s ongoing commitment to recognizing and rewarding the hard work of educators”.
Muturi said that they have 229, 292 primary school teachers currently undergoing retooling and an additional 60, 000 junior secondary school teachers being trained.
Margaret Ndung’u Rejects President Ruto’s Appointment
Margaret Ndung’u is the second of Ruto’s nominee to reject a presidential appointment. Ndungu, the immediate former CS for ICT, has turned the position for Kenya’s High Commissioner to Ghana.
Former West Mugirango MP, Victor Mogaka Kemosi, also under a similar decision in April 2024, declined President Ruto’s nomination for the same position.
Ndung’u’s decision comes days after, a letter to the Parliamentary Committee for Defence and Foreign Relations, confirmed her position.
Former Kiambu Governor William Kabogo was nominated to the ICT docket, replacing her in the recent cabinet reshuffle. Margaret is a PhD holder in Information System from University of Nairobi (UON) and her career is extensive spanning various sectors, including academia, NGOs, and the private sector.
Nancy Barasa, Former CJ, Appointed To Lead Task Force
President William Ruto has appointed former Deputy Chief Justice, Nancy Baraza, to help in the fight against gender-based violence (GVB). Barasa will chair a 42-member task force mandated to assess and review the GBV cases in the country and recommend measures.
Other members of the task force are Washala Abdi, Ruth Aura Odhiambo, Linah Kilimo, Edna Ngare Ngeno, Linda Musumba, Diana Christine Nanjala, Peter Mwangi Kamau, Anthony Nzioki and Surum Ipato. The team will be required to submit its report within 90 days.
The President noted that “increased cases of GBV and femicide continue to cause immense physical, emotional, and economic harm to individuals, families, and communities.”
Through a gazette notice published on Friday, January 10, Barasa’s appointment marks a return of the former deputy CJ to the public service after a short stay in office. Her dramatic exit from her DCJ post years back was following an incident where she assaulted a security guard on duty, causing a public outcry and eventual resignation.
Cardinal Otunga High School Dorm Catches Fire
In a shocking state of affairs, a dormitory at the Cardinal Otunga High School erupted into flames on Thursday, January 9th. According to eyewitnesses, there was no scene that led to the fire and firefighters and security detail came out to help.
The cause of the fire remains unknown, and school officials vowed to investigate the matter further to address the unfortunate incident. No injuries have been reported so far.
Kenyans have expressed mixed reactions on the issue, which comes just a few days after the release of 2024 KCSE results. It also comes days after the school’s opening day for the 2025 school calender.
