0

According to recent media reports, Kenya is facing a severe shortage of essential medical supplies. These include: HIV medicines, HIV test kits, BCG vaccines for newborns, condoms and hospital supplies.

The shortage is majorly due to last year’s loss of large quantities of medical supplies. The consignment  went missing from government warehouses.

Global supply chain is overwhelmed and had made it harder to get new stocks. KEMSA, the government body tasked with medical supplies, has been criticized for poor management and rampant corruption at the helm.

This puts about 1.4M people, living with HIV, at a serious risk. It also comes at a time where new 16,752 HIV new cases were recorded in 2024. These shortages could reverse years of progress in public health, especially in fighting HIV/AIDS, which remains one of Kenya’s major health challenges.
