Top 5 Today: Man, Found With Dismembered Wife’s Body, Detained and Other Headlines

John Kyama, a carpenter, has been detained for 21 days after his arrest in Huruma Estate, Nairobi. Kyama was caught carrying a bagpack containing dismembered body parts of his wife, during a regular police check. The 29-year old allegedly killed his 19-year-old wife, Joy Frida Munani, over a domestic dispute. According to the police, the accused who confessed to the heinous killing, appeared calm and did not seem any remorseful.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has asked the court for 21 days to further detain Kyama to complete investigations. They plan to conduct a mental health evaluation of him, take his DNA tests and perform a postmortem exam on the wife’s remains. The exact motive behind the crime is still a mystery and investigations are ongoing.

Opposition leader, Raila Odinga, launched what seems like the final round of campaigns for the African Union Commission (AUC) Chairman seat.

The former PM met President E. Mnangagwa of Zimbabwe, Nangolo Mbumba of Namibia, President Duma Boko of Botswana between Jan 13th and 16th. A few hours later, on the same day, he met Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa. The diplomatic charm ended in Lesotho where he met PM Sam Matekane in Maseru on January 23rd.

Raila seems full of charge ahead of the February 2025 elections. He seems optimistic with the support of the African heads of state who share his vision and agenda for Africa.

Malaysia Issues a Notice to Kenyans Travelling There for Jobs

The Kenyan High Commission in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, has on January 23rd, issued a stern warning on potential immigration risks and a growing trend of job scams targeting innocent Kenyans.

“The attention of the High Commission has been drawn to the recent surge in the number of Kenyans being lured to travel to Malaysia in the pretext of securing job opportunities which turn out to be non-existent,” the State Department of Foreign Affairs posted on their X account.

Recruitment agencies exploit the visa-free entry policy in Malaysia (valid for 30 days), leaving Kenyans stranded with financial burdens. The Commission further warned Kenyans found guilty of overstaying in the country past 30 days, of severe legal consequences, in accordance to Immigration Act 1959/63 (Act 155).

CJ Koome Accuses Government of Withdrawing Her Security

Chief Justice Martha Koome, through the Ministry of Interior, accuses government of withdrawing her security detail in a new development. Koome is disappointed and describes it as an attack on her office and the Judiciary arm in total.

In a letter dated 23rd January, cc Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen and Police IG Douglas Kanja, says the act “undermines judicial independence, threatens institutional integrity, and endangers democratic progress”.

In response, IG Douglas Kanja falsified the claims noting that the said officers were either sent on training after promotion or procedurally transferred to other stations. He added that other officers have been reassigned to the CJ as the others to start their promotional courses.
