Top 5 Today: Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika Sentensed to Six Months in Jail and Other Headlines

Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika and Nakuru Water and Sanitation Services Company (NAWASCO) Managing Director James Ng’ang’a have been served a six-month civil jail term or pay a Ksh 2M fine.
The Environment and Land Court found that both Governor Kihika and NAWASCO, failed to comply with orders issued on September 26, 2024, which halted the disposal of waste into Lake Nakuru.
The court had previously issued an environmental restoration order against the county government, mandating a permanent cessation of waste disposal into Lake Nakuru. Despite this, the county government and NAWASCO continued to dispose of refuse, toxic chemicals, and industrial wastes into the Lake Nakuru Basin, leading to significant environmental degradation.
Governor Kihika opposed the case, arguing that she was not responsible for the operations of NAWASCO. However, the court held her accountable in her capacity as the county’s chief executive.
The ruling comes after a suit filed at the Environment and Lands Court, Baboon Project Kenya alleged that both Kihika and Ng’ang’a have ignored an order issued on September 26, 2024, which permanently banned any further refuse disposal into the lake.

New IEBC Panel Chair, Nelson Makanda, Suffers From Bell’s Palsy
Speaking at an interview with a local TV station on Monday, February 17, 2025, Nelson Makanda explained how he woke up with a disfigured face on November 17, 2024. His purely symmetrical face woke up completely different- a rare facial condition called Bell’s palsy.
