Top of The Day: Senate Committee Leadership Reshuffle and Other Headlines

During a Senate session on Monday, February 24, 2025, lawmakers voted in new leaders of the Senate Committees. This comes amid political realignments following former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua allies removal from key positions.

Mombasa Senator Mohamed Faki and nominated Senator Karen Nyamu are the new Senate Standing Committee on Land, Environment, and Natural Resources chair and vice chair, respectively. They were voted unanimously. They replace Nyandarua Senator John Methu and Samburu Senator Lelegwe Ltumbesi, who previously led the committee.

Trans Nzoia Senator Allan Chesang and nominated Senator Miraj Abdulrahman were re-elected as chair and vice chairof the Senate Standing Committee on Information, Communication, and Technology (ICT). Siaya Senator Oburu Odinga has taken over as chairperson of the Senate Standing Committee on Energy. Elgeyo Marakwet Senator William Kipkemoi Kisang is Odinga’s  vice.

Morara Kebaso Asks For Donations From Kenyans Again

After taking a two-weeks break from his self-appointed civic duties, Inject party leader, Morara Kebaso, is asking Kenyans to once again contribute towards his endeavours. Through his X handle, he said the break was to help Kenyans recover from the difficult period of January and February.

Morara provided his personal accounts for anyone willing to contribute to his civic education. He vowed to post accountability reports on his page to check how the money donated was spent.

Kenyan Man Fatally Shoots Wife in the USA

In Killeen, Texas, a Kenyan man, identified as John Gitau Mwangi, has been arrested for allegedly shooting dead his wife at their home.

According to the Killeen Police Department, Gitau, 42, shot his 37-year-old wife, Esther Gitau severally on Friday, February 21, at around 7:15 PM local time.

After a welfare call, police arrived at the residence where they found Esther with multiple gunshot wounds. Medics pronounced her dead at the scene.

John is currently being held at the Killeen City Jail, awaiting formal charges. He is facing felony charges that are punishable by life in jail or death penalty under Texas law. He arrested at Fort Cavazos, the military installation where he was stationed.

British National Body Found in Makueni

Campbell Scott, a UK national and Senior Director at credit scoring firm,  FICO.

Kenyan detectives and investigators are working round the clock to locate Campbell Scott’s killers. Their counterparts in the UK, are also working hand in hand to unravel the United Kingdom business man’s death.

Scott travelled to Kenya on February 16th for a business meeting, before disappearing the next day.

Among those arrested is a man captured by CCTV cameras, on Sunday, accompanying Scott from a hotel in Westlands. It’s suspected that he requested a taxi for the deceased to Nairobi’s Pipeline estate on Monday, February 17.

The taxi driver was also arrested to record his statement. He was later released on police bond but the motor vehicle was detained pending investigations.

Campbell’s body was found in a sack by a Kenyan cattle herder in Makueni. He was a senior director at credit scoring firm Fico and was attending a conference at the JW Marriott Hotel in Nairobi.
