Why Ruto is a lucky President?
The ongoing anti-government demonstrations in Kenya might have been a blessing in disguise for President Ruto who is facing a lot of backlashes from the Kenyan mass following the proposed and passed Finance Bill 2024. The bill that sought to collect more revenue for the government backfired when the Kenyan people specifically the Gen Z took to not only the streets but also occupied parliament momentarily to show how disgruntled they were with the betrayal by their elected leaders. Many people died and eventually when the pressure had increased; Ruto was creased and succumbed to the pressure by withdrawing the bill.
However, amid all this fiasco; an opportunity that not many presidents can get creeped in and Ruto took not time but grabbed it by both hands. The opportunity to get rid of rogue leaders in his cabinet and an opportunity to appoint a new cabinet that meets his ambitions as the president of Kenya. When President Ruto was campaigning for the presidency, he had all these friends that fought alongside him and when he eventually clinched power, he rewarded their loyalty by giving them posts in his cabinet. However, one year down the line, these political cronies proved to be a nightmare for him due to their incompetence and corruption that created a bad image for his government. Notable cabal in this category include transport CS Murkomen, Sports CS Ababu Namwamba, Agriculture CS Mithika Linturi and many more. However, due to their previous loyalty the president had no political means to kick them out of his government. He had no choice but to put up with them even though they were a virus that threatened to kill his tenure.
However, the demonstrations presented an opportunity for him to have another shot at having a better cabinet that can work and deliver his manifesto. The demonstrators did his dirty work by outlining some of the problems they had with his leadership which included the behavior of the said cabinet members. To save his image and tenure he disbanded his cabinet, which is not only his cabinet but his close acquittances who in normal conditions wouldn’t be sacked by anyone. The demonstrations have enabled him to sack the cabinet members and in his unquestionable defense it is all to save his government. Not many leaders can have such an opportunity to save face and get rid of a bad cabinet and hence President William Ruto is indeed a lucky man.
